What games/systems are you most interested in/do you collect?
I am playing Warhammer 40.000, Age of Sigmar and Underworlds.
I am very interested in Napoleonics game system but I haven’t had the time yet to try that.
Any specific armies?
Dwarves have always been my favourite army since Battle 4th edition. However I play Stormcast and Kharadron for Age of Sigmar. I am curious about the new battletome Citie of Sigmar if it allows me to field a dispossessed army…
For 40k I have a soft spot for the Dark Angels, maybe because it’s my first? However since I play competitively I was fed up to be stomped on so I have now a nice Imperial Knights army of which I am pretty proud of. I also got some Custodes but still not sure to keep them or not…
As for Underworlds, I have collected all the warbands but my favourite would be the Kharadron and the Cursebreakers.
What aspect of the hobby are you most interested in?
I love playing even though I usually suck at it and as a lot of Hobbyists, I don’t play as much as I would like. The Building aspect is probably my favourite though, could not explain why, but I just like it.
As for painting, Contrast has been a real life-changer and made me enjoy painting again even though I don’t only use contrast paints. The fact that it is so easy to use made me come back at the painting table and finished a whole chunk of my Stormcast army and my Primaris own chapter.
What compelled you first start or restart the hobby?
Well, my hobby has had 2 very distinctive period. The first time was with Warhammer Battle with 4th edition, me and my twin brother used to love toy soldier and one thing led to another and we had our parents buy us the superb box set with Goblins and High Elves… I ended up collecting Dwarves and my Brother Undead but it was a cool nice period even though we never took part in a community and back then with no social media or Youtube it was very good to have a brother to play and hobby with. This period lasted 3-4 years and then school became a little more serious and we dropped but kept the minis.
Second time I fell into Hobby was only 5 years ago and it’s like riding a bike. I went to a Games Workshop store with my soon to be wife on my Birthday and she told me to choose one starter box, I already had a fantasy army so was considering Lord of the Rings and 40k. I went for 40k and bought the Deathstorm box with Blood Angels vs. Tyrannids. Never played either of these 2 factions and ended starting a full hobby adventure since then.
Do you have any future plans for your hobby?
I am very interested in the Cities of Sigmar book. If I could play again with my Dispossessed/Duardin/Dwarves with some artillery and may be some Demigryph knights (love these models) that could be awesome. I also have a Kharadron army that need to be painted and which also need a new battletome so we will see what tomorrow brings.
As for 40k, I have finally settled on a color scheme and a Chapter name for my Primaris army so I am planning on making them grow slowly so I can paint them. I am also really curious to see what they will do with Psychic Awakening and if they will finally awake the Lion.
What sort of materials do you use to create your hobby? How long does it take you to complete a project?
I consider myself an average hobbyist, I don’t have all the special tools some can have. I am not very good with crafting stuff… so I have my old brushes, my paints and my glue. My hobby knife and scissors and that’s pretty much it…
Projects for me consists usually in finishing to paint a tournament army. So like 2000pts of 40K or 2000pts of AoS … and to be honest, the pressure of a coming tournament works wonders on my productivity… For example, I painted 4 knights in a month : 1 Castellan, 1 Warden, 2 Armiggers… but on the other hand it took me 4 years to finish painting my Stormcasts…. Right now I am in a better place painting wise so I have plenty of units that are finished in a decent amount of time.
What inspires you to keep going? Do you admire any other hobbyists?
I discovered something that would have been very difficult 25 years ago when I first started this hobby… There are plenty of people like you, people that likes playing with toy soldiers even if they’re adults, or that have difficulty to resist buying the new shiny stuff from GW… It is called a Community. I think as a whole it’s the Community that makes me going.
My Wargaming club of which I am now the president (or High King as I like them to call me). We play every month and to be part of it always pushed me to go to tournaments and have some paintings.
The Twitter community of course, which I find just amazing. There are some really talented and creative people out there and what they do is always breath taking for me. I like their simplicity and the fact that they just want to share.
The podcasts. I have discovered Podcasts and I listen to loads. All of them are different and the ideas that are being shared and the enthusiasm is really contagious.
What do you find most frustrating about the hobby?
Money of course cause I need to (try) to be reasonable about Hobby expenses. But Also time, you never had enough time to finish this project or to go to x events…
The other thing that is more frustrating for me is my inability (is that a word?) to choose color scheme… I go one way and then a week later I realize I don’t like this scheme and need to start all over….
Do you have any tips for any aspiring hobbyists – beyond the usual ‘practice daily’?
Just HAVE FUN !!! Please, this is a hobby, this is something people do in their free time (for the majority of people not GW employees 😉 ) so when you play try to have fun and not play to complain on how this army is broken or this rules is dumb…
Also, the community is indeed a great community so just be curious, ask questions, go see YouTube tutorials go to your LFGS or GW be a part of this community. Remember, 25 years ago none of this was there.
What is your fondest hobby memory?
I was very proud and really love the Last AoS tournament that I organised at my Club. It as not a big fancy event but we had 16 players and all players (and it is for me the most important) were very happy about this day.
Hobby wise, I am quite happy with my Ghost of Redemption chapter, and it is really a project that I am enjoying. Adding units little by little and (most importantly) painting them… To be honest it’s the first time I am that organised for a hobby Project.
Anything else you would like to tell our readers?
