What games/systems are you most interested in/do you collect?
I’ve mostly been interested in Warhammer 40k. There are other systems that I have been tempted to try out; the newer A song of Fire and Ice sounded briefly interesting, partially cause Game of Thrones, but I am halfheartedly looking for a decent replacement for Old-Hammer style games.
Apparently, Necromunda is on the cards as well, which should be fun when I finally get up and running with it again.
Although I have a Seraphon and Daemon armies, I am less interested in Age of Sigmar as a game and world setting. But the Cities of Sigmar book will no doubt change this.
Any specific armies?
For 40k, I am a total loyalist.
Space Marine home brew – which is a pretty old force now and mostly vanilla marines aside a few sneaky Primaris that have wormed their ways in.
Space Marine Mortifactors for my Primaris Shadowspear boxed set, which I have painted a whole… one of! (ish)
I also have an Astra Militarum army which was for allying with my other half, when we used to play doubles at the local gaming group; they are my pride and joy and so, so much fun to play!
For Necromunda I’m yet to assemble a Delaque gang.
I’ve already mentioned the Seraphon and Daemons of Chaos, for Age of Sigmar/Old-Hammer.
What aspect of the hobby are you most interested in?
‘Official’ parts of the hobby, assembling and painting models.
‘Unofficial’ parts of the hobby, drawing, writing histories, coming up with interesting characters and doing nothing with them.
I also enjoy the video games a lot. Mordheim, Blood Bowl & Dawn of War 2 (Last Stand) have been regular features in this house. Space Marine was pretty epic too, played that a lot when I was still at University. Still trying to get to grips with Inquisitor: Martyr, but it’s on the cards.
What compelled you first start or restart the hobby?
I found the local Games Workshop store when I was a youngster, went in and brought the only thing that I could actually afford; a pack of Nurglings. I took Heretic Deb in with me at some point and we thought it was cool.
Skip a few years and I met my Husband who reintroduced me to the hobby. I’ve been on and off with it ever since.
Do you have any future plans for your hobby?
Who doesn’t? My aims at the moment are to finish off projects rather than to start new ones. I’d like to get my Space Marine Home Brew painted; but having a lull with them currently.
My Seraphon are appearing on the painting table a lot lately and I’ve heard distant rumours of them being rereleased, so that’s promising.
I’d like to expand my Chaos Daemons as well, but no more buying until some ‘stuff’ has been finished.
What sort of materials do you use to create your hobby? How long does it take you to complete a project?
Nothing ‘extra’ special. I like Rosemary and Co brushes for painting with. I use Games Worshops range of paints, with very few exceptions – I even like their brushes for ink/watercolour painting.
As for the art related stuff, I sketch everything with a pencil, scan it in and use Paint Tool SAI to line in my art and Fire Alpaca to colour it. For this I used a Wacom Intuos.
What inspires you to keep going? Do you admire any other hobbyists?
I really like the painting work of Vidpui and UgBubble, but even online I am somewhat reserved and keep people at arms length (Unless they are sneaky enough to get through the nets) and don’t know that many people.
What keeps me inspired the most is not knowing what I would do – and stick too – if I didn’t do this! I’ve tried doing other things, but the hobby is something I keep coming back to, regardless of breaks and shifts.
Sketch work, I feel like I need to mention Jes Goodwin, cause who doesn’t look at his sketches and think, wow.
And Blazbaros is pretty awesome too.
What do you find most frustrating about the hobby?
Nay-sayers and the fact no one has invented paint brushes that get into awkward places.
Do you have any tips for any aspiring hobbyists – beyond the usual ‘practice daily’?
Paint the army that you want to paint – nothing worse that painting something you don’t enjoy and have fun.
Try not to compare your early skills (be them with painting, drawing or game playing) to the professionals. It’ll only make you feel like shit about your own journey.
Find your own voice with doing things. Enjoy your individuality – no one else can do something the way you do it.
What is your fondest hobby memory?
I was playing against someone really, really good at wargaming at the local gaming club! He was regularly winning games and needless to say, I was getting my ass handed to me by his Dark Eldar! But it was such a fun game! If that wasn’t enough, part way through the game he told me that is was great playing games with me because I had such a positive attitude towards gaming; in hindsight he was probably trying to make me feel better, but the memory remains.
More recently, the Paint-a-thon with Heretic Deb
Anything else you would like to tell our readers?
I felt extremely cheesy for having written my own answers for a Fangirl Feature; this section of the blog is meant to be about other peoples hobbys not mine, but no one came forwards for a feature! So, please help me avoid doing this in future and drop me an email via the Fangirl Feature page!
And if you’d like to be featured on the blog then please, don’t hesitate to get in contact.
