What games/systems are you most interested in/do you collect?
I’m definitely a Warhammer fan, but I’m one of those annoying fans who doesn’t play. I have unopened Space Hulk and Lost Patrol sitting on top of the wardrobe. If I did start playing though I would probably start out with a small scale game like Kill Team maybe? I don’t paint quickly enough to play games involving huge armies!
Any specific armies?
Alpha Legion 30K, because they are absolutely the best army in the 31st Millennium, with the two best Primarchs 😉
Order of the Bloody Rose: Because they are awesome. Who wouldn’t want an army of warrior women with Power Armour and Astartes levels of firepower?
Although neither of the above have any rules for Kill Team, so maybe I’ll need to find something else! I’ve painted a few Commissars, maybe I’ll make a quick Imperial Guard force and get into it that way!
What aspect of the hobby are you most interested in?
I’m definitely more of an (average) painter than a player! I really enjoy the Horus Heresy series, as well as a number of books set in the 41st Millenium. It was the fiction from the Black Library that got me back into painting after my 20-year hiatus.
What compelled you first start or restart the hobby?
Ha, I’ve just realised I’ve answered some of this question already. I first stumbled across Games Workshop when I was around 11 whilst visiting relatives with my old man in Edinburgh. I walked in thinking it might be a games shop. But the staff must have been having a slow day, as they sat down and gave me a free painting lesson then and there with one of the old Chaos Warrior models (squat looking dude with an axe!). this was around… 1996? So I Painted those for a bit. And Dark Angels. No one else painted those round my way. After a couple of years though I found other interests were taking over and I dropped out of painting and collecting for a short while…
Do you have any future plans for your hobby?
I entered the last Golden Daemon in November and learned some valuable lessons. So I might try again this year. Maybe. Obviously being an office painter my time is a little constricted as I only get around 50 minutes a day to paint when on lunch!
I’m going to continue building my Order of Bloody Rose also. Turn them from a patrol to something resembling a small rabble.
The commissar I’ve been working on (this guy) is for a comp at my local GW, based upon characters from the Black Library. He’s going to have to be my Commissar Cain. Hopefully, I’ll get Jurgen done this week!
What sort of materials do you use to create your hobby? How long does it take you to complete a project?
Usual bits, Green stuff, Cork, polystyrene… I scour eBay occasionally for bits I might need, so flock and bushes and things to pretty up a base. In terms of timings… A single mini takes me around a week usually. Assuming I’m in every day. My commissar took around 5-6 days at around 40-50 minutes a day to paint.
What inspires you to keep going? Do you admire any other hobbyists?
Seeing the great work of other people! Additionally, the great fiction that comes out of Black Library. This might seem like a bit of a cop out, but there are far too many hobbyists whose work I admire to list here. I would suggest you work your way through some of the great #warmongers on twitter.
What do you find most frustrating about the hobby?
As a painter? The inability to get something quite how you want it, regardless of how many times I go over it in a single sitting. Some things need lots of practice, so I’ve had to learn to live with the fact that not all I do will be perfect, especially if I’m not willing or able to put the hours into it.
Do you have any tips for any aspiring hobbyists – beyond the usual ‘practise daily’?
Practice daily is a hugely helpful tip though! If you’re stuck on something ask Twitter. If you like the look of something and want to try and replicate it, ask Twitter. There are so many great painters on Twitter more than happy to share what they’ve learned don’t be afraid to ask.
Don’t ask me though (just kidding, ask, although everything I’ve learned is no doubt through someone else!)
What is your fondest hobby memory?
Probably this one of Kurtha Sedd. He was one of my first sales on Ebay!
The base was inspired by the stories “Know no Fear” and the collection from the underworld war on Calth, where the Word Bearers sucker punched the Ultramarines but ended up locked in a brutal struggle for the planet.
Anything else you would like to tell our readers?
It was like that when I got here I swear!
No, in all seriousness It’s always great to interact with other hobbyists, one of the aspects of painting and Warhammer I’ve thoroughly enjoyed over the past few years are the people I’ve met along the way. Without them, I doubt I would have got half as much done or even stuck it out. So yeah, thanks guys!
Many thanks to Office Painter for taking the time to answer these questions for the Fangirl Feature this week.
