Friday Feature – Horrorlandcop74

This weeks Friday Feature is from Horrorlandcop74

Artist showcase! Share with us: Your favourite images

1. What compelled you first start drawing and creating?

Firstly, I’ve liked drawing since an early age. I’ve always enjoyed making stuff too, be it decorating with stickers, glitter or making collages of my favourite stuff (mostly favourite tv shows and other media), cutting out and gluing onto paper, and recently, making digital collages/cut outs.

Also, like everybody else at school, I had art classes. All our art would be drawn in sketch books provided by the teacher, which she would then mark. Looking back at my arts and crafts book, I’m surprised I did quite well. I regret not having kept up my drawing from when I was 15 until when I started drawing again in 2014 (that’s 16 years!!)

2. Do you have any future plans for your artwork?

My plans are to continue drawing and improving. I’d love to be able to do digital art someday, but first I need to improve my traditional graphite drawing, then stepping up to traditionally inking and colouring.

3. What sort of media do you use to create your artwork? How long does it take you to complete a piece of artwork?

I usually use pencil, paper, ink outliners and markers/coloured pencils. Sometimes I’ll dabble with digital stuff, but its pretty basic. The duration depends on what the art work is. I mostly do sketches, which maybe take 20 minutes. Sometimes I’ll outline them straight away, but a lot of the time I’ll put the pencil drawing away and dig it out a while later to ink and colour. I try to scan all my pencil/ ink drawings too.

If its a digital piece, I do a little bit everyday (about half an hour a day, then again it depends how big it is.) Usually it can take me up to 1-2 weeks.

4. What inspired you to draw? Do you admire any other artists?

Many things actually. When I was a child, I was inspired by my favourite shows and comics, mostly Disney and French cartoons. I drew my favourite characters. More recently, I was inspired by my daughter when she turned 2 in 2014. She was always wanting me to draw her favourite cartoon characters, so I picked up from there. This inspired me to revisit some of my favourite characters I had drawn/written fanfics of, and it was around this time (towards the end of 2014), that I went back on to deviantart. I’m very glad I did!

There are a couple of artists I admire, such as Tragicfangirl, Nightriver16, Shadow12177 and Irenei, all on deviantart. I met Tragicfangirl and Nightriver16 when I went back onto deviantart, and I’m glad I did go back when I did, otherwise I never would have met these lovely talented people.

5. Do you have any tips for any aspiring artists – beyond the usual ‘practise daily’? (These tips don’t have to be art creation related.)

The only thing I will say is never give up what you enjoy doing. Continue drawing, even if you don’t think your drawing is good enough draw for yourself. And you will get better in time! Also, never let negative people bring you or your art down. Be positive and confident, and befriend other inspiring, talented artists who you can share stuff with and also learn from. I’ve picked up a few tips on improvement from my talented artist buddies.

6. What is your fondest artist memory? (eg – An art trade you were really proud of/pleased with, your first commission, etc)

There have been many with my artist buddies, but I guess my fondest memory is returning to deviantart and meeting my buddies Niky and Sandora, who like me were fans of Slappy the Dummy, I included both of them as characters in my story. That was a fun memory.

7. Anything else you would like to tell our readers?

Thank you for listening, and remember: never stop creating!
